The introduction to EPIC in six chapters: the idea, how it works, what it delivers, where it goes, the installed record, and how it is written into a job.
EPIC is a gravity-driven, sand-based system that combines stormwater capture, filtration, subsurface irrigation, drainage and greywater reuse in one passive installation: patented chambers on an EPDM liner, a thin gravel layer, and a deep profile of washed sand through which water rises to the roots by capillary action.
The brochure explains the profile layer by layer, the eleven steps from rain arriving to the system running, the SM24 and LG46 chambers, and why the chamber does not clog. It sets out the nine functions one buried profile can perform, from irrigation and drainage to filtration, cooling and heat exchange, and the classes of water the system will run on, from potable water and treated sewage effluent to greywater, blackwater, brackish water and untreated seawater, with the rule or limit that applies to each.
The application chapter covers parks and civic landscape, sports fields, golf, streets and stormwater, agriculture, date palms, green roofs and planters, wastewater and saline irrigation, and passive cooling of synthetic turf. The record chapter gives six projects with their dates and outcomes, among them the University of Nevada, Reno fields of 2000, Sonoma Golf Club, Wildwood Commons and the Nevada DOT SR-28 road filter, with signed statements from clients and researchers.
The final chapter is for specifiers: a performance clause, four hold points, a plain statement of what EPIC is not, and the product line from the EPIC System to EPIC Flux. It closes with how a project moves from site and water review to supply and supervision, and with the three volumes of the Technical Series that carry the detail.
